Looking at the Forest

Life in the concrete jungle robs people of their innate connection to the forest. In ‘Looking at the Forest’ Manit Sriwanichpoom sets out to convey the quiet terror he feels in close confrontation with nature by keeping the focus fixed at just one metre and fully opening the aperture to record blurry, dreamlike images. It is unclear what the photographer sees, adrift in the forest’s aura in a state of formlessness, indescrible and enigmatic, manifesting in beauty and a hushed silence.

There is no landscape, no sense of the lovely view whatsoever. What is he looking at? What does he want us to see?

Manit:“I want to capture that feeling, when we enter the forest and can sense that something else. It’s not just trees. It’s an experience of the aura of that dimension, that abstract quality of the light and shadow invoking the inexpressible, eerie and unfathomable.”

Photo-artist Manit Sriwanichpoomhas been creating and exhibiting work of Thai contemporary art for over 30 years. His work has been widely exhibited both in Thailand and internationally, forming part of many of the world’s important museum and private collections. ‘Looking at the Forest’was produced when Manit visited a number of forests from the north of Thailand to Korea, Japan, Australia, France and Spain between 2009 – 2014.

ชีวิตกลางป่าคอนกรีตทำให้ผู้คนสูญเสียสัมผัสและความเข้าใจต่อป่าและธรรมชาติ,‘มองป่า’(Looking at the Forest)คือความพยายามของ มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ ที่ต้องการถ่ายทอดความรู้สึกของเขาเมื่อเผชิญหน้ากับป่าธรรมชาติด้วยความหวั่นไหว การปรับเลนซ์ถ่ายภาพระยะใกล้เพียงหนึ่งเมตร พร้อมทั้งตั้งหน้ากล้องกว้างสุด (large aperture)เพื่อเปิดรับสภาวะฟุ้งฝัน เบลอร์ ดูไม่ชัดเจนว่าช่างภาพเห็นอะไร หรือกำลังถ่ายภาพอะไรที่ล่องลอยอยู่ในบรรยากาศของป่า มันเป็นสภาวะที่ไร้รูป ไร้คำบรรยาย และเต็มไปด้วยปริศนา ความงาม ความเงียบสงัด ทิ้งไว้ค้างในผลงานชุดนี้

‘มองป่า’ไม่มีความเป็นวิวเป็นทิวทัศน์เลย เขามองอะไรอยู่? เขาอยากให้เราเห็นอะไร?

มานิต:“สิ่งที่พยายามจะจับคือความรู้สึกเวลาเข้าป่า และเราสัมผัสว่ามันมีอะไรอยู่ในป่า มันไม่ใช่แค่ต้นไม้ อยากให้คนเห็นบรรยากาศของมิตินั้น ความเป็นนามธรรมจากแสงเงาของสิ่งที่บรรยายไม่ได้ สิ่งที่วังเวง เร้นลับและหยั่งไม่ถึง”

มานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ ศิลปินภาพถ่ายร่วมสมัยผู้สร้างสรรค์งานมายาวนานกว่า 30 ปี ผลงานของเขาได้รับการเผยแพร่ทั้งในและต่างประเทศ และได้รับการสะสมอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์สำคัญๆ ของโลก ‘มองป่า’เป็นผลงานภาพถ่ายธรรมชาติที่มานิตถ่ายทำอย่างจริงจังตั้งแต่ปี 2552 – ปี 2557 ทั้งป่าจากภาคเหนือของไทย จากเกาหลี, ญี่ปุ่น, ออสเตรเลีย, ฝรั่งเศส และสเปน
