Naree on a White Horse

“Naree on a White Horse” by Pakapol Wannao narrates Thai political ideas in recent years, inspired by a prophecy about a “heroine” who would bring peace to the country during times of conflict. Different political groups have interpreted this prophecy in their own way, claiming that someone from their side is the Naree on the white horse.

Pakapol creates a new nationalist story by introducing a necklace with three gemstones—red, white, and blue—which causes chaos in a fictional country as bad people fight over it, leading to widespread unrest. The good people are forced to flee into the forest. A queer Naree then comes down from the heavens to gather the good people and fight with love and goodness, eventually bringing peace back to the country. The prophecy says that whenever the country is in trouble, this Naree will return on her white horse to bring happiness again.

The vivid, colorful photographs combined with a playful digital collage make the content extremely fun. Phakphol’s story is similar to what often happens in our country, where conflicts that can’t be solved by normal means lead to calls for the “special power” to solve the problems. These special powers usually operate outside the normal system and seem to have a miraculous ability to create change. The Naree, or whoever rides the white horse, appears to be a part of the special power, and the good people can only wait for the prophecy to come true again in our so-called civilized land.

Pakapol Wannao graduated in Motion Pictures and Still Photography from Chulalongkorn University. His work explores personal stories and the history of Thai politics through photography and film. This exhibition is his first solo show at Kathmandu Photo Gallery.

“นารีขี่ม้าขาว” ของ ภัคพล วันเนา เป็นงานที่พูดถึงวาทกรรมทางการเมืองไทยในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา จากคำทำนายเรื่องการปรากฏตัวขึ้นของ “วีรสตรี” ที่ออกมาช่วยทำให้บ้านเมืองสงบสุขจากความขัดแย้งของผู้คนในสังคม ฝ่ายการเมืองทั้งหลายต่างตีความ และยกให้คนของฝ่ายตนเป็นนารีขี่ม้าขาวตามคำทำนายที่ดูคลุมเครือนั้น

ภัคพลเขียนเรื่องเล่าเชิงชาตินิยมขึ้นมาใหม่ โดยให้สร้อยที่มีอัญมณี 3 สี แดง ขาว น้ำเงิน เป็นดังต้นเหตุให้คนชั่วในประเทศสมมติแห่งหนึ่งแย่งชิงกัน จนเกิดจราจลไปทุกหัวระแหง จนเหล่าคนดีต้องหนีเข้าไปในป่า นารีที่เป็น Queer นางหนึ่งลงมาจากสวรรค์เพื่อเรียกเหล่าคนดีให้กลับมาต่อสู้ด้วยความดี ความรัก จนทำให้ชาติกลับมาเป็นปกติ และเมื่อใดที่ชาติขาดความสงบสุข นารีจะขี่ม้าขาวกลับมาคืนความสุขให้บ้านเมืองอีกครั้ง

งานภาพถ่ายสีสันจัดจ้าน บวกกับการทำดิจิตอลคอลลาจอันสุดแสนจะคิทช์ (kitsch) ส่งให้เนื้อหาดูสนุกแบบสุดลิ่มทิ่มประตู ตำนานของภัคพลดูคลับคล้ายคลับคลากับเรื่องที่เกิดขึ้นตลอดระยะเวลาของบ้านเมืองเรา ที่เมื่อมีความขัดแย้งที่ดูจะแก้ไขไม่ได้ด้วยกระบวนการปกติ ก็จะมีเสียงเรียกร้องให้ “อำนาจพิเศษ” ออกมาให้ปัดเป่าทุกข์เข็ญให้หมดสิ้นไปแทบทุกครั้ง และอำนาจนั้นก็มักจะอยู่เหนือระบบ มีฤทธานุภาพทำให้เกิดความเปลี่ยนแปลงได้อย่างน่าอัศจรรย์ นารีหรือใครก็ตามบนหลังม้าขาวก็ดูจะเป็นเนื้อเดียวกันกับอำนาจพิเศษนั้นชนิดแยกไม่ออก เหล่าคนดีก็ได้แต่ยิ้มรับ และเฝ้ารอคำทำนายครั้งใหม่ให้เป็นจริงในดินแดนอันแสนศิวิไลซ์แห่งนี้

ภัคพล วันเนา จบการศึกษาด้านภาพยนตร์และภาพนิ่งจากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย งานของภัคพลคือสำรวจเรื่องราวส่วนตัว ประวัติศาสตร์การเมืองไทยผ่านภาพถ่ายและภาพเคลื่อนไหว นิทรรศการนี้เป็นงานแสดงเดี่ยวครั้งแรกที่คัดมันดูโฟโต้แกลเลอรี่
