The Desiring Garden

Produced within intensely urban Hanoi, Vietnam, the images in ‘The Desiring Garden’ prey on the perception of the exotic; a Rousseau-like play on an environment in which certain indigenous species of plants, certain items of human utility, certain sources of nourishment and the people who interact with all of these things are seen together in some arrangement, upsetting the logic of both the location and the document itself.
The garden is a manufactured one. The flowers, fruit, vegetables and animals (the flora and the fauna) purchased in open-air markets or from street vendors and placed within some small area of green space within the dense urbanity of the city.
These are portraits of people who at the moment of initial encounter stepped willingly, curiously, uncertainly into the concocted environments they stopped to inquire about and were recorded in them.
At once beautiful and illogical, invitingly lush and dark, like a fairy tale, the images might be seen as the Darwinian retort to original sin, the bourgeois consumption of Eden. This is the attempted recollection of a state never known.
The physical view of the people inhabiting the frame, standing within their embellished environments, is that of an outsider; of one who looks upon but not in and is, in turn, unnoticed.
Biography
Jamie Maxtone-Graham has a professional background of more than 20 years in commercial and narrative cinematography in New York and Los Angeles.
In 2007 he became a Fulbright Fellow, receiving a grant funding his proposal to photograph contemporary youth culture in Vietnam and currently lives in Hanoi.
His photography has been published on burn Magazine, Trans Asia Photography Review, Culture Hall and tiny vices and exhibited in Hanoi, London, Netherlands, and Bangkok.

คุณจะรู้สึกอย่างไร? หากต้องมาเป็นแบบยืนอยู่ท่ามกลางดอกกุหลาบที่มีเกสรเป็นลูกตายักษ์สดๆสีดำ; ต้นไม้ที่มีหูหมู สีชมพูโผล่ออกมาจากลำต้น; หางวัวเผือกวิ่งพล่านบนพื้นดินแบบหนังไซ-ไฟ; หรือมีตีนไก่สีเหลืองงอกเป็นดอกไม้
เหล่านี้คือบรรยากาศ “สวนปรารถนา” (The Desiring Garden) ของช่างภาพอเมริกันรุ่นใหญ่ เจมี่ แม็กซืโทน-เกรแฮม ที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นกลางกรุงฮานอย แล้วเชื้อเชิญเพื่อนๆ คนรู้จักชาวเวียดนาม ทั้งหนุ่ม-สาว เด็ก-คนแก่ มาเข้าฉากถ่ายรูปร่วมกับสวนประหลาดผิดเพี้ยนที่เขาเนรมิตขึ้น จากพันธุ์ไม้ ดอกไม้ และอวัยวะสัตว์ที่วางขายทั่วไปตามท้องตลาดสด แม้บรรยากาศของภาพถ่ายชุด “สวนปรารถนา” จะเต็มไปด้วย ความรู้สึกหนักหน่วง มืดทึมมากว่าสดใส แต่ก็ไม่สิ้นหวัง เพราะสีหน้าท่าทางของชาวฮานอยยังคงฉายแววตาของความหวัง และความฝัน
เจมี่ แม็กซ์โทน-เกรแฮม ช่างภาพอเมริกัน ผ่านงานด้านภาพถ่ายโฆษณาจากนิวยอร์คและลอสเองเจลิส มากกว่า ๒๐ ปี ในปี ๒๕๕๐ เขาได้รับทุนฟูลไบรท์ให้ถ่ายภาพวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัยของคนหนุ่มสาวเวียดนาม นอกจากนี้เขายังมีผลงานตีพิมพ์ในแม็กกาซีน มีชื่อ และแสดงผลงานภาพถ่ายในหลายประเทศ ปัจจุบันพำนักและมีครอบครัวอยู่ที่กรุงฮานอย
